Why it’s on the listThe first complete car developed by quattro GmbH put a Cosworth-tuned twin-turbo V6 into an Avant and quietly established the modern Audi RS formula.
What to checkDocument the build date, then inspect camshaft wear, turbo and timing-belt history, corrosion, accident repairs and whether expensive RS-specific parts remain original.
Renault
Phase 1 cars built in 2001 cross during 2026, on the individual car’s build date.
Why it’s on the listTWR removed the rear seats from a Clio, installed a V6 in their place and sent the power to the rear wheels. It is why this watchlist exists.
What to checkVerify the build date, identity and accident history. Pay particular attention to rear suspension geometry, cooling, body repairs and model-specific trim.
Mitsubishi
Evo VIIs built in 2001 cross during 2026. The individual build date decides when.
Why it’s on the listThe Evo VII brought ACD and AYC electronics to a larger platform without making the car less intense. America knew the name before it could buy the real thing new.
What to checkConfirm chassis identity and history. Inspect corrosion, crash or competition damage, AYC and ACD operation, drivetrain condition and modifications.
Honda
Early DC5 Type Rs are entering the 25-year window in 2026. A sales or registration date does not prove the build date.
Why it’s on the listAmerica received the related Acura RSX, but not Honda’s 220 PS JDM Type R specification. Its engine, differential, gearing and factory detail make the badge meaningful.
What to checkDemand Japanese history and confirm K20A identity. Inspect the shell, second-gear and synchro wear, the limited-slip differential and every modification.
Opel
Speedsters built in 2001 cross during 2026. Verify the manufacture date of the individual car.
Why it’s on the listDeveloped and built with Lotus, the Speedster wrapped a bonded aluminium chassis in an Opel badge America never received.
What to checkInspect the bonded tub and crash box before the bodywork. Check clam damage, rear toe links, cooling history and the availability of special parts.
Renault
The earliest Avantimes built in 2001 cross during 2026. Each car still needs build-date evidence.
Why it’s on the listA pillarless two-door grand tourer with the height and cabin of an MPV was brave, luxurious and commercially disastrous.
What to checkTest the panoramic roof, double-hinge doors, windows, climate control and gearbox. Rare glass and trim can matter more than ordinary mechanical wear.
BMW
Examples manufactured in 2002 reach the federal 25-year safety threshold during 2027, on their individual build date. Model year and first registration do not establish eligibility.
Why it’s on the listThe European diesel E53 is a different take on the original X5. Our search specification: 2002, black exterior, leather seats and a sunroof; manual or automatic.
What to checkVerify the manufacture date and factory specification by VIN and supporting records. Inspect corrosion, drivetrain, cooling, service history and sunroof operation; confirm the remaining import requirements before purchase.
Ford
The earliest Focus RS cars built in 2002 begin crossing during 2027, on the individual build date.
Why it’s on the listThe first Focus RS turned Ford’s sensible European hatchback into a limited-production, front-wheel-drive homologation fantasy.
What to checkConfirm originality and inspect the Quaife differential, gearbox, turbo system, corrosion and evidence of crash or track use.
Volkswagen
European R32s built in 2002 begin crossing during 2027. Verify the individual build date and market specification.
Why it’s on the listThe first R32 combined a narrow-angle six-cylinder engine, 4MOTION and a compact Golf body. Europe received it first.
What to checkVerify market specification, Haldex service and timing-chain condition. Inspect corrosion, repairs, cooling and DSG history where fitted.
Audi
The earliest C5 RS6 Avants built in 2002 begin crossing during 2027, on the individual build date.
Why it’s on the listCosworth helped put a 450 PS twin-turbo V8 into Audi’s discreet C5 estate. America received the sedan; the Avant is the defining shape.
What to checkReview gearbox, turbo, cooling and timing-service history. Inspect the DRC suspension, brakes, corrosion and body repairs.
Alfa Romeo
The earliest 2002-built 147 GTAs may begin crossing late in 2027. Launch and registration dates do not prove manufacture date.
Why it’s on the listAlfa installed its 3.2-litre Busso V6 in a compact front-drive hatchback and made restraint somebody else’s problem.
What to checkVerify timing-belt history, differential and gearbox condition, cooling and front-suspension wear. Inspect corrosion and GTA-specific parts.
BMW
M3 CSLs built in 2003 begin crossing during 2028, on each car’s build date.
Why it’s on the listBMW built 1,383 examples, removed 110 kilograms and gave the E46 M3 a carbon roof, sharper engine and a defining induction sound.
What to checkConfirm CSL identity. Inspect the carbon roof, rear floor, SMG operation, track history, accident repairs and rare lightweight parts.
Porsche
996 GT3 RS cars built in 2003 begin crossing during 2028, on each car’s build date.
Why it’s on the listThe first road-going GT3 RS of the water-cooled era sharpened an already serious GT3 into the blueprint Porsche still follows.
What to checkAuthenticate the car. Review over-rev data, engine and gearbox history, shell and cage, track damage, paintwork and original RS parts.
These cards do not expire when a car sells. Marketplace links open the latest search; build date, specification and condition still need independent verification.
Why this exists
At 25 years from its date of manufacture, a car can enter the United States without having to comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards that kept many European models out when they were new.
