People assume the expensive parts of a car are the engine, the gearbox and their remaining dignity after buying a Fiat Multipla.

They are wrong.

The real threat to your household budget may not be under the bonnet at all. It hangs from a few mounting points at the front and smiles at the road through a collection of LEDs.

The headlight.

This becomes especially funny when looking at ordinary used cars: rational, depreciated machines bought precisely because the first owner has already absorbed the expensive part.

Then somebody taps a parking bollard, cracks a lens or discovers moisture inside one lamp — and the allegedly sensible car sends an invoice from the economic class above it.

A small mechatronics company

Once, a headlight was a glass bowl, a reflector and a bulb that could be bought next to chewing gum at a petrol station. If it stopped working, you changed the bulb and carried on with your life.

A modern adaptive lamp is different. It may contain several LED modules, control units, cooling hardware, levelling motors and shutters. It communicates with suspension sensors and the car’s data network. Matrix systems selectively shape the beam around other traffic; more elaborate versions add cameras, navigation data and individually controlled light segments.

It is not really a lamp. It is a small mechatronics company with a transparent front office.

And it is mounted precisely where small accidents happen.

The arithmetic of a minor collision

The figures below are an editorial market snapshot, not a parts quotation. Used-car asking prices, exact lamp versions, country, side, manufacturer, included control units and VAT all change the result. They show the scale of the exposure — not a promise that every Superb or Prius carries the same lamp.

Indicative complete OEM or OE-quality assembly prices before labour and, where required, coding or calibration. Cheaper aftermarket, repaired and used units can exist; so can substantially dearer dealer-only variants.

This is not internet melodrama

8% when new.
Worse when old.

Thatcham Research found that in some cases a replacement headlamp represented as much as eight per cent of the entire vehicle’s value when new. That is before the car has spent ten years depreciating while the replacement part continues to live in the manufacturer’s price list.

ADAC’s 2026 repair-cost research gives the problem a suitably absurd face: a laser headlamp for a BMW 330e at around €3,300 net as a replacement part, contributing to a repair bill of almost €8,000. The same organisation has documented high-tech headlamp replacement at authorised workshops reaching €5,700 and beyond.

The reason is simple. The car depreciates. The headlight does not depreciate at the same speed — and workshop labour has shown no interest in becoming nostalgic.

The crack that costs more than the impact

The bumper may flex back into shape. The paint may survive. But a cracked lens, broken housing or water path can condemn the entire lamp because many assemblies were never designed to be opened and rebuilt component by component.

Repair kits for mounting tabs exist on some models, and specialist repair is becoming more credible. But a safe repair depends on the location and type of damage. A glue gun is not a repair strategy for an optical system carrying a type approval.

The replacement may still not be finished

Buying the lamp can be only the first line on the invoice. Depending on the system and repair, the unit may need adjustment, coding or calibration. HELLA notes that matrix systems can require recalibration after lamp removal or installation and after other work that changes the vehicle’s reference geometry.

A used lamp is therefore not automatically a €300 solution. It must be the correct side, traffic direction, hardware level, control-unit configuration and software-compatible version.

The cheapest option can be the most expensive

Marketplace listings mix bare housings, lamps without modules, right-hand-drive units, repaired examples and complete assemblies. Two parts can look identical in photographs while differing in functions the car expects to find.

This is why a suspiciously cheap replacement is often a part you pay for twice: once online, and again when the workshop explains why the car rejects it.

Before buying the car

Look into
its eyes.

    Compare left and right

    Lens wear, production markings, clarity and colour should make sense as a pair. One fresh lamp beside one sandblasted lamp can be innocent — but it is still a question.

  2. 02
    Inspect every visible mounting point

    Look for broken or repaired tabs, stressed plastic, fresh sealant and panel gaps suggesting the lamp has moved.

    Check for moisture intelligently

    A light mist can occur temporarily on vented lamps. Droplets, pooling water, staining or persistent condensation are a different conversation.

  4. 04
    Test every lighting function

    Low beam, high beam, indicators, daytime lights, cornering and adaptive functions — ideally in conditions where their operation is visible.

    Scan the relevant control systems

    Stored faults, communication errors and implausible levelling data can reveal a problem that a dashboard warning does not.

  6. 06
    Price the exact VIN specification

    Do not search “Astra headlight” and declare victory. Confirm the part number, included modules and the fitted repair cost.

None of this means you should avoid LED, matrix or laser headlights. They can illuminate more of the road, reduce glare when correctly designed and adjusted, and make night driving materially better.

It means only that the used-car inspection developed in an era of engines and gearboxes needs to catch up with the car parked in front of us.

Inspectors still listen for timing-chain noise and buyers still ask whether the automatic gearbox oil was changed. Sensible questions. But the most disproportionate invoice may be staring back at them in complete silence.

So before buying a used car, do not merely look under the bonnet. Look into its eyes.
