How to readthe advert.

Pickerl neu. Bastlerfahrzeug. Im Kundenauftrag. The German is not especially difficult. The consequences are.

Image planned — original photography to be supplied

Austrian used-car adverts are written in German, but this is not the main obstacle. Google can translate servicegepflegt. What it cannot tell you is whether the seller means twelve invoices, three stamps or an oil change performed during the administration of Bruno Kreisky.

An advert is not a report on the car. It is a controlled release of information by somebody who would like to stop owning it. Certain phrases provide evidence. Others create distance. A few are advance work for the argument that will begin after the gearbox does not.

The useful translation therefore has three parts: what the words actually promise, what they carefully avoid promising, and which document or question can close the gap.

Red does not mean “never buy”. It means the advert has transferred the burden of proof — and possibly the vehicle — to you.

01 · The reassuring sticker

Pickerl neuis a date, not a diagnosis.

The Pickerl is Austria’s statutory §57a roadworthiness inspection. A fresh one is useful. It tells you that, on a particular day, an authorised inspection station did not find a reason to refuse the certificate.

It does not tell you how much life remains in the dual-clutch gearbox, whether the engine consumes a litre of oil every 900 kilometres, whether a traction battery has aged gracefully or whether the timing chain has begun practising percussion. ÖAMTC explicitly distinguishes a Pickerl inspection from a pre-purchase inspection.

Ask for the complete §57a-Prüfbericht, not merely a photograph of the windscreen sticker. The report gives the date, mileage and recorded defects. Compare all three with the advert and the service history.

THE AD SAYSPickerl neu
READ IT ASRecently passed one defined inspection.
ASK FORThe full report, date and tested mileage.

Pickerl bis 10/2026

This states a due month, not when the car was last inspected. Austria normally permits many passenger cars to be inspected one month before and up to four months after the punched month. Do not confuse that domestic tolerance with a fresh certificate, and do not rely on it for travel abroad.

Pickerl 10/2026 + 4

At least the seller has acknowledged the tolerance period. The car may be legal in Austria for the moment while being five months further from its last positive inspection than the headline suggests.

Pickerl gegen Aufpreis

“Fresh Pickerl at extra cost” means the seller wants you to fund both the inspection and the uncertainty revealed by it. Agree that the car must receive a positive report before payment, and decide in writing who pays for necessary repairs.

02 · The largest word in the advert

Bastlerfahrzeug.Read this one literally.

The friendly translation is “project car”. The useful translation is “the seller is presenting this vehicle as defective, unsuitable for normal operation and intended for somebody who will repair it”.

That description matters technically and legally. Austrian trade guidance tells dealers that wording such as Bastler-Auto or “not suitable for operation” may help define what was sold — but only when it reflects the vehicle’s real condition and the defects are clearly documented. Merely ticking “defective” on a perfectly driveable retail car does not make consumer law evaporate.

None of this improves the car. If you buy one, budget as if it requires transport, diagnosis and substantial repair before use. If it turns out merely to need an oxygen sensor, you have won a small lottery. Do not make the lottery your financial plan.

04 · Condition without commitment

Words that sound more mechanical than they are.

FAHRBEREIT“Ready to drive”

Usually means the car starts and moves under its own power. It does not promise roadworthiness, a valid Pickerl, freedom from warning lights or an enjoyable second kilometre. Ask separately: is it road-legal, what faults are known, and can it complete a proper test drive?

KEINE BEKANNTEN MÄNGEL“No known defects”

The important word is known. The seller describes their knowledge, not the vehicle. Ask what diagnostics and inspections support the statement, then conduct your own.

DEM ALTER ENTSPRECHEND“Appropriate for its age”

A sentence with almost no measurable content. A 14-year-old car can have a stone chip or a perforated sill; both are technically related to age. Request photographs and a list of defects rather than debating the philosophy of ageing.

OPTISCHE MÄNGEL / GEBRAUCHSSPUREN“Cosmetic defects / signs of use”

Sometimes this means a bumper scuff. Sometimes it is the phrase selected after photographing the dry side of the car. Ask for close-ups of every panel, wheel, seat and glass surface before travelling.

05 · Maintenance vocabulary

Servicegepflegtis the start of a question.

Servicegepflegt says the car has been serviced. It does not define where, when, how completely or according to whose schedule. Scheckheftgepflegt or lückenloses Serviceheft is a stronger claim, but the useful object is still the record itself.

Ask for dated invoices or a digital history showing mileage and work performed. Compare intervals with the manufacturer’s schedule. A row of stamps can confirm workshop visits while remaining silent about gearbox oil, brake fluid, Haldex service, spark plugs or every other item that was not part of a basic oil service.

Zahnriemen neu should produce an invoice: date, mileage, parts and workshop. Establish whether “timing belt” means the belt alone or the complete kit, tensioners and water pump where applicable. The adjective new has had a remarkably elastic career in used-car advertising.

Evidence ladder

  1. StrongInvoices + dates + mileage + itemised work
  2. UsefulComplete digital manufacturer history
  3. PartialStamped service book without invoices
  4. Decorative“All services done” in the advert

06 · Damage vocabulary

The adjective is not the history.

Unfallfrei is useful only after you establish who is making the claim and for which period. Laut Vorbesitzer unfallfreimeans the current seller is repeating somebody else’s statement.Keine Unfallschäden bekannt is weaker again: no accident damage is known to the seller.

Nachlackierung tells you that paint was applied. It does not tell you why. A repainted door may follow a parking scratch; an entire side and roof may point to hail; several panels with filler may record something more energetic. Measure the paint, inspect joins and fasteners, and ask for photographs or invoices from the repair.

Vorschaden fachgerecht repariert is not necessarily a reason to reject the car. It is a reason to request the pre-repair photographs, damage estimate and repair invoice. “Professionally” is an assertion. The structure, geometry and invoice are evidence.

07 · Price vocabulary

The number may have conditions.

VB / VERHANDLUNGSBASIS

Negotiable

The listed amount is a basis for discussion, not a promise of a discount.

FIXPREIS

Fixed price

The seller is announcing the negotiating position. The condition of the car is still allowed to disagree.

FINANZIERUNGSPREIS

Finance price

The attractive number may depend on financing. Request the cash total and the full financed cost.

EXPORTPREIS / NETTO

Not necessarily your price

VAT, NoVA treatment, buyer status or export conditions may change the amount. Confirm the gross consumer price in writing.

MWST. AUSWEISBAR

VAT can be shown separately

Relevant mainly to eligible business buyers. It is not an automatic 20 per cent discount for a private person.

EINTAUSCHPREIS

Trade-in condition

The advertised figure may assume you supply another car. Ask for the price without trade-in before travelling.

Send this before viewing

One message that removes most of the theatre.

A serious seller may not have every answer immediately. What matters is whether precise questions produce precise evidence.

Guten Tag, ich interessiere mich für das Fahrzeug. Bevor ich einen Besichtigungstermin vereinbare, könnten Sie mir bitte Folgendes bestätigen bzw. zusenden:

  1. Wer wird im Kaufvertrag als Verkäufer eingetragen?
  2. Foto des letzten vollständigen §57a-Prüfberichts;
  3. Servicehistorie/Rechnungen mit Datum und Kilometerstand;
  4. bekannte technische und optische Mängel sowie Vorschäden/Nachlackierungen;
  5. ob eine unabhängige Kaufüberprüfung und eine Probefahrt möglich sind;
  6. den endgültigen Bruttopreis ohne Finanzierung oder Eintausch.

Vielen Dank!

German seller checklist

The one rule worth remembering

Specific nouns beat reassuring adjectives.

A date, an invoice, a mileage reading, a named seller and a written defect can be checked. Top, perfect, beautiful, reliable and well maintained cannot. The more confidently an advert supplies the second category, the more calmly you should request the first.

Quick answers

Four phrases, no ambiguity.

Does Pickerl neu mean the car has no faults?

No. It means the vehicle recently passed Austria’s statutory §57a roadworthiness inspection. Ask for the full report and still inspect the car independently; the test is not a condition report for the engine, gearbox or other expensive systems.

Can an Austrian dealer sell a car without Gewährleistung?

A professional seller cannot simply exclude statutory warranty in a consumer sale. For a used car first registered more than one year ago, the period may be reduced from two years to one only by a specific agreement. A private seller can generally exclude warranty.

Is a Bastlerfahrzeug automatically scrap?

Not automatically, but you should treat the description literally until proven otherwise: a defective vehicle sold for repair rather than normal use. The label is not a magic legal escape for a dealer, yet it is a very clear warning about the seller’s position and the likely condition.

What does im Kundenauftrag mean at a dealership?

It usually means the dealer says it is only brokering a sale for the owner. Check whose name appears as seller in the contract, who receives the money and which warranty rules apply. The building where the car is parked does not decide the legal relationship.
